I want to quickly update my
review/comments on THE CLONE MACHINE
vs. DI-SECTOR. I recently upgraded my
CLONE MACHINE disk for the new version
of the program--SUPERCLONE. It will
back up more software than the earlier
CLONE MACHINE, and it will do it a
bit faster (about twice as fast as
before if you use the FASTCLONE
program on the disk--a screen-blanked
version of SUPERCLONE). The updated
version also has the old reliable
'regular' TCM/UNGUARD programs on the
disk for the other uses (track/sector
editor, directory functions, etc).
There's also an improved error check
program that will check an entire disk
for errors in under 3 minutes.
Other programs that are included
with SUPERCLONE are a 4-minute backup
program that seems to be EXACTLY the
same as the backup program of the same
name in PAYLOAD, and a utility that's
called the 'TOUGH NUTS UTILITY' that
will (supposedly) allow backing up
of programs with new and different
protection schemes not yet in use.
The version that I got did not
have any documentation with the
upgrade (SUPERCLONE has quickie
instructions in the program--all that
you're likely to need, since this is
a 'one-pass' copier like DI-SECTOR).
The parameters for using the TNU
is supposed to be available through
THE CLONE NEWSLETTER or directly from
MICRO-WARE Distributing.
Now, as to a comparison between
SUPERCLONE and DI-SECTOR. As far as
I'm concerned, DI-SECTOR still wins.
DI-SECTOR only requires that you swap
disks three times (after the FORMAT
pass), and SUPERCLONE/FASTCLONE makes
you change disks five times. They
both allow backup of ELECTRONIC ARTS
software, but they go about it very
differently. SUPERCLONE/FASTCLONE
makes an exact backup--meaning that
the backup is copy protected, too.
DI-SECTOR makes an unprotected backup
(EA only) that will load faster than
the original. You do have to go an
extra step with DS, though. Because
of the method used, you must use the
special copy program, then copy any
other files (other than the EA files)
using ANOTHER program! Oh, well, I
guess you have to choose according to
your own tastes.
SC/FC is slightly faster than DS
(FASTCLONE versus a screen-blanked
DI-SECTOR: about 18 minutes for SC/FC
and 25 minutes for DS for a complete
disk backup). THE CLONE MACHINE
can do one thing that DS cannot, which
is to copy specific tracks from one
disk to the same tracks on another,
but there's a very nice extra that
comes with DI-SECTOR that I don't
think is available elsewhere. It's
called DRIVE/64 MON. This is a
powerful machine language monitor that
is similar to other monitor programs,
but has the ability to allow you to
monitor the DRIVE (and write your own
drive routines) as well as the more
usual functions! Quite handy, if you
like ML.
Hopefully, this has helped those
considering software that lets you
make LEGAL backups (no mass copying,
please!) by outlining SOME (by no
means all!) of the features available
in these two packages. I have seen
ads for several other packages, but
haven't yet seen DISK MAKER, COPY-Q,
or DISK COMMANDER, and only quickly
glanced over ULTRACOPY 64, so I can't
comment on those. Anyone else tried
any of these? I'd be interested in
hearing about them.
Should you be interested in
either of these backup utilities, they
are available from:
